Le journaliste écrivain Graham Hancock parcourt le monde à la recherche de preuves de l'existence de mystérieuses civilisations perdues remontant à la dernière période glaciaire. Il tente de prouver qu'un évènement climatique survenu il y a 12 000 ans aurait anéanti une civilisation entière bien plus sophistiquée que les simples chasseurs-cueilleurs qui, selon certains archéologues, vivaient à cette époque.
