주인공인 경찰 서장 '조'가 근무하는 롱아일랜드 페코닉 만에서 비행기가 추락하는 사고가 발생하면서 시작된다. 현장으로 출동하게 된 '조'는 사고가 난 비행기에서 유일한 생존자를 찾게 된다. 그 아이는 자신의 이름도 모른다. 이 소녀에게 '조'는 '파이퍼'라는 이름을 붙여준다. 파이퍼는 자기가 누군지도 모르고 어떤 일이 벌어졌었는지도 기억하지 못하는 어린 아이이다. 헌데 '조'는 비행기 사고에도 아무런 상처도 부상도 입지 않은 이 아이에게 미심쩍음을 느끼게 되고, 이윽고 기자인 '베니'를 우연히 만나게 되는데 그에게서부터 커다란 음모의 소용돌이에 들어가게 될지도 모르는 가설과 맞부닥치게 된다.
