팔레스타인 교사 바셈은 아들과 관련된 비극적인 사건을 겪은 후 개인적으로 큰 상처를 입는다. 그러던 중 학생 중 한 명인 아담과 깊은 유대감을 형성하고, 영국인 사회복지사 리사와 뜻밖의 인연을 맺으면서 그의 삶은 예기치 않은 방향으로 흘러간다. 한편 미국의 유명 변호사와 그의 아내는 팔레스타인 저항 단체에 포로로 잡혀 있는 이스라엘 군인 아들을 돌려달라고 요청한다. 이 단체의 포로 교환 요구는 당국과의 긴장을 불러일으키고, 군인에 대한 수색은 더욱 강화되고 바셈과 아담의 이웃은 혼란에 빠진다.
