イギリスの人気作家チャールズ・ディケンズは、自作の朗読劇「クリスマス・キャロル」の舞台を5歳の末息子ウォルターのいたずらで台なしにされ、親子の関係がこじれてしまう。妻キャサリンのアドバイスを受けたディケンズは、我が子のために執筆した特別な物語「王の中の王」をウォルターに読み聞かせることにした。それは二千年前、ベツレヘムで生まれたイエス・キリストの壮大な人生を描いたものだった。12歳で〝神の子〟としての使命を自覚し、30歳で洗礼を受け、弟子たちの目の前で多くの奇跡を起こし、人々に愛と赦しを説き続けるイエス。信仰が広まる一方、「神への冒涜だ」と敵意を募らせる者たちもいた。
