I perversi
In epoca vittoriana, Lily Watkins è assunta come cameriera in casa del ricco Stephen Lowry, la cui moglie malata da tempo muore ben presto. Convinti tutti che il decesso sia da attribuire a una violenta forma di gastroenterite, Stephen gioca il ruolo del vedovo addolorato agli occhi della società ma Lily sa che la realtà è ben diversa. Approfittando di ciò, comincia a ricattare il padrone e in cambio del suo silenzio pretende che questi soddisfi ogni suo capriccio o pretesa economica. La situazione per Stephen diventa insostenibile e, quando si innamora nuovamente di una donna della sua stessa classe sociale, decide che è arrivato il momento di mandare Lily via di casa ma ciò non sarà affatto semplice da concretizzare.

I have always really enjoyed watching this film. It pairs Stewart Granger, at the top of his game, and his real life wife Jean Simmons and their chemistry is wonderfully effective in this aptly named dollop of Victorian melodrama.
