Es uno de los grandes hitos que ha producido BBC en la pasada década, adaptación a todo lujo de la famosa Henriada de Shakespeare La primera temporada es una adaptación de la segunda tetralogía histórica de Shakespeare y narra la historia de los reyes: Ricardo II, Enrique IV y Enrique V. La segunda se basa en la primera tetralogía de Shakespeare y narra la historia de los reyes Enrique VI y Ricardo III.

Tras la larga Guerra de las Dos Rosas (1455-1487), en la que se enfrentaron las familias de los Lancaster y los York por el trono inglés, Inglaterra disfrutó de un periodo de paz bajo el reinado de Eduardo IV. El hermano de rey, el deforme Ricardo, un hombre envidioso, perverso y muy ambicioso, recurre al engaño y a la manipulación para tejer una red de intrigas y crímenes en torno al rey con el fin de conseguir la corona.
