He stood at an impressive 6 feet 4 inches (193 cm) tall, adding to his commanding stage presence. Yarnell began his career as a singer, studying opera and performing at the Earl Carroll Theatre in Los Angeles. He quickly transitioned to acting, making his Broadway debut in the original production of Camelot as Sir Lionel. Yarnell also appeared in a number of films, including Irma la Douce (1963) and The Next Best Thing (2000).
